The Albanian Chronicles Series Is Born

Today I have the pleasure and pride of presenting the second volume of the Albanian Chronicles series: The Most Important Events of the 20th Century in Albania. This work was born from a simple idea, almost by chance, as often happens with the most heartfelt and lasting projects.

It all began two years ago, when I decided to write a post to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Albania’s national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, on January 17. As I worked on that first text, I realized the topic was too rich and complex to be contained in a single article. So, for nearly the entire year, I published a series of posts on the hero’s life, deeds, and legacy.

At the beginning of the following year, I gathered those posts into a volume: Athleta Christi, a complete monograph dedicated to Skanderbeg.

Riding the wave of that experience, I decided to turn my attention to a more recent yet no less significant period: the 20th century. A century that profoundly shaped modern Albania, marked by dramatic events, political shifts, cultural revivals, and lingering wounds.

As I wrote in the foreword to The Most Important Events of the 20th Century in Albania, the 1900s in Albania were a century of radical transformations, collective tragedies, and historic turning points. A period that stretches from independence from the Ottoman Empire to the fall of the communist regime. A turbulent path that forged the country’s identity.

Albanian communism was among the harshest and most repressive in Europe, comparable in brutality to Stalinism. Its leader, Enver Hoxha, was a hardline Stalinist who isolated Albania from the world and suppressed every form of dissent.

I am particularly proud of this work because it was conceived and completed during an extremely difficult time in my life. The year 2024 was when I lost my father. A deep pain, accompanied by other painful events. In those months, writing and reading became my refuge. Holding the finished book in my hands was like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Another essential piece is The Enigma of the Albanian Language: a collection of posts written between 2009 and 2012 on the blog of the same name. The book rigorously and passionately explores the origins, evolution, and peculiarities of the Albanian language.

As of today, these three books – Athleta Christi, The Most Important Events, and The Enigma of the Albanian Language – form a cohesive and complementary triptych, exploring three dimensions of Albanian identity: the hero, the nation, and the language.
